First time home owner - still have a lot to learn. Thank you in advance for all your help.

There is a rubber ring that fell out of the spout / diverter. The ring is flat on one side and caved in on the other. Looks like a tub with a hole in it.

Without the ring, the shower diverter would not work.

I forced the ring back into the plastic portion of the diverter, with the flat side facing away from the wall. Now the diverter works - except water is also coming out of the spout.

I guess I put the rubber piece back in the wrong way. :(

Question is - how do I get the rubber piece back out? Is there a way for me to just unscrew the nob that you use to pull the diverter up? Or am I stuck with replacing a new one? Please assist!

Thank you and happy new year!

    Replace it.
Tub spouts are generally connected in one of 2 ways--they screw onto a threaded nipple or they are slip fit onto a piece of copper and held in place with a set screw.
If it is a slip fit, there will be a small opening for an allen wrench on the bottom of the spout at the tub wall. Loosen the set screw and gently twist the spout off. If it has an IPS connection, there will be no opening. Care should be taken when removing this type of spout. If the fittings inside the wall have not been properly secured during installation or if they are particularly tight, you can cause damage to fittings and piping inside the wall when removing.

Thank you for the reply. It's the IPS style spout. I see a weekend of fun and glory for me. :) If I get a professional to do it, how much would that run me? Any ideas? Thank you again!

It should cost whatever his/her minimum charge is, usually the fee for one hour's work, although it will only take him a small portion of an hour to do it.
