I have purchased a replacement shallow well pump. Good price.
My exsisting intake line from the well is 1".
The new pump has a 1 1/4" intake.
Can I use a reducer ? John V.

I would use a bell coupling and give it a try, but the pump might struggle a bit if the 1" line cannot flow water as quickly as it wants.

Lee is describing cavitation. That is what a pump does when it can't get the water it needs. It makes noise and the cavitation can actually cause damage.

Just curious, since you described your pump by price not quality, what pump did you get?

Replace shallow well pump

:confused:I have been on city water for 10 years, but have kept the well and pump going for an outside tap and one toilet to keep the well fresh.

The old pump and tank (26 years) was still working, but getting tired.
Since it was not a necessity I had been waiting for a inexpensive replacement. I bought a Canadian Tire pump, on sale...

Hoping an attached picture of the pump works...I am
new in using the Forum...If it doesn't Ill try again.

Thanks, for your reply. John V.

They actually do make cheaper pumps than that, but not much. Sure it will work, but for how long is the question. Is it the same kind of pump as your old one? Does the old pump have only one pipe going to the well or two?

Replace shallow well pump

Bob,

My system has only 1 pipe(1"), from the well.

The old pump is the type with a ventura on the front which
of course could be moved to the bottom of a well, if used
with a 2 pipe deeper well system...(1" and 1 1/4")

But, the ventura intake on the old pump which goes
to the well, is 1".

I am fairly close to the well (about 15FT) with only one 90.

With that pump it might not make any difference. Calling that pump a 1/2hp is stretching it a bit, so I don't think you'll be seeing much difference.

Replace shallow well pump

Thanks Bob,

I figured it will probably work with a bell reducer.

Just thought it may be a good idea to check.

Now, Ill get to work...assembling pump, seperate tank and fittings.

I'll try to remember to post a message to let you know how
well it worked out.

Thanks, John V. ;)
