no hot water in shower or tub

anybody help? daughter just bought home that was empty for about 5 mos. all faucets in home work properly except for 2nd bathroom tub shower. cold water is fine but no water at all on hot. it is single knob tub shower diverter valve is open don't know if hot ever worked but house is only 3 yrs old any ideas? i've heard of sub standard tub shower diverters from lowes and home depot not giving hot water. thanks

The shower valve would have a spool valve as part of the anti-scald technology required by the feds. This spool valve can get slammed to one side if both the hot and cold aren't turned on at the same time. It could be stuck, instead of being able to float back and forth. This valve is what adjusts the flow (and therefore the temp) if say someone flushes the toilet and keeps the shower temp from scalding the user. Depends on the brand and model how best to fix, if it's that. Might just respond to a rap with a rubber mallet.
