Hi I am new to the forum so hope I am in the right topic area. I had a boiler/ H2O heater/and well pressure tank replaced after 36 years by a heating company. The old galv. 50 gal. pressure tank worked great ,no unusual noise, replaced it because it was leaking. Problem , it was replaced with a 45 or so gal. Amtrol Champion Bladder pressure tank. What is happening is when the pressure drops to 35 # on the new pressure gage/ switch and the pump kicks in I start to hear a wow wow that increases in loudness as the pressure builds until it shuts off at 48# with a LOUD snap from the pressure switch followed up by a loud thump of the 3/4 copper inlet pipe from the well in the wall. I am at a loss here ,the installation looks ok. the tank was precharged to the low 30's ( I did not check it ) . Would it help if I put an expansion tank just down stream from the pressure switch which is just short of the bladder tank inlet?

The air precharge has t obe 1-2 psi less than the cutin setting on the switch. I.E. 35/55 gets 34-33 psi with no water in the tank. The differential on the switch should be no less than 20 psi, 35/55 not 35/45.

The noise could be from rigid copper vibrations. The check valve in/on the pump in the well snapping shut is normal but, copper tubing is not. Most wells use PE or other plastic water lines that can expand and don't transmit vibration.

Your pressure tank is an expansion tank.

new well pressure tank noise

Thanks Gary, I will drain the bladder tank and check the pressure empty .Will also kick up the high end to 55 # and see if it helps. The system has been in 35 years . The well is 240 feet deep with about 75 feet of 3/4 inch flex copper leading to the house.. Did not have the pipe hammer with the old pressure tank . Hoping what you suggested will fix it ... Thanks again for the input..
