Greetings all -
I have been studying the softener threads on this site for a while, and found the discussions very helpful.
I am looking to optimize salt usage on my installed system, am a little concerned my C or BF are set too low, especially BF.
and hopefully someone will advise if I am on the right track. Your feedback is appreciated. :)

My water situation
  • Filtered Well Water
  • hardness = 13.6 gr/gal
  • iron = 0.1 ppm
  • total hardness = 14 gr/gal

Based on what I have read in this forum, plus Gary's sizing information,
I installed a softener tank system with the following:
  • Fleck 5600 SXT
  • BLFC = 0.5gpm
  • DLFC = 3.5 gpm
  • 2 ft[sup]3[/sup] standard (cheap) resin

My Calculations (based on Gary's calculator and charts)
5 people x 60 gal/day = 300gal/day

300 gal/day x 14 gr/gal = 4200 gr/day x 8 days = 33600 grains removed in 8 days

Salt efficiency calculation
34000 gr / 3333gr hardness/lb salt = 10.2 lbs salt total
10.2 lbs salt / 3 lbs salt/gal brine = 3.4 gal brine
3.4 gal / 0.5 gpm = 6.8 mins

Safety factor calculation
36400 gr cap. x 0.85 SF = 30940 gr cap / 4200 gr/day = 7.4 days
(with 5640 gr reserve, or 1.3 day reserve)

My 5600 SXT settings:
DF: GAL
VT: dF1b (Standard downflow/ one backwash)
CT: Fd (Meter Flow Delayed)
NT: 1 tank
C: 36k (capacity)
H: 14 (hardness)
RS: FS (Percentage Safety Factor)
SF: 15 percent
RC: FS (not used)
DO: 9 (Day override)
RT: 2:00AM
BW: 5 mins (back wash)
BD: 60 mins (brine draw)
RR: 5 mins (rapid rinse)
BF: 7 mins (brine fill)
FM: t0.7 (3/4" Turbine Meter)

Sorry for the length of the post, just wanted to include the details, and thanks in advance.
Regards, Costello

Was really hoping to get either - 'looks ok'
or - what the heck were you thinking, this is what I'd recommend .... Not sure what to make of the crickets chirping.
Hope I didn't say anything to keep folks away - Peace to all.

Try clicking Notifications or Private Messages above.

I think your numbers are good, and you might go to brine refill of 8 minutes for 40000.

Hello Reach4 and mialynette2003 -
This sounds right to me too.
If I make the switch to C=40, BF=8 (6lbs/ft[sup]3[/sup] @ 2 ft[sup]3[/sup] = 12lbs / 3lbs/gal / 0.5 gal/min = 8 mins)
Woohoo! I think I'm getting the hang of this :)

That might shift my days between regen toward 8+ right?, so I'm guessing to leave my override DO=9 days?
I only ask b/c I am on well water.

Thanks much

As I understand it, you could change DO to 14 or so, since your iron is low.
