IX filter for Arsenic and Nitrates

Hi All:

I have gained enough information in the last few weeks to result in my sending the unopened Aquasana whole house well filter back to the sender. I am going to use clack and fiberglass tanks, with a water softener, followed by an Ion Exchange resin to get rid of my elevated As and NO3 and then a UV Max D4.

A few questions:

1) Can/should I mix an Arsenx resin and NO3 type II resin in the same tank, i.e. topdress with Arsenx and use them to get rid of both As and NO3? Is that the best approach? Can I mix a NO3 selective resin with Arsenx and not worry much about dumping? Can I get rid of Arsenic and NO3 using just one media?

2) Do these filters reduce the influent by a percentage, i.e. the effluent levels will be some percentage of the influent, or do they reduce to a certain level. My NO3 is 11 and my As is .006. I don't have that much to go to get my levels pretty low- can I expect them to be not detectable after the filter?

3) In terms of dumping the nitrate or Arsenic, can I be comfortable that if I regenerate frequently enough I will not have a problem with dumping?

4) I can easily monitor NO3 levels with a test stick, but Arsenic is more difficult. Will the NO3 dump first and serve as the "canary in the coal mine", or is it possible I could dump Arsenic and not be aware of it?

I read a few published studies of combined As/NO3 filtration from cities that had hired Kinetico to filter their municipal wells, and the data reported while they were tuning their system showed very large surges in the levels towards the end of a run. I was also unimpressed with the absolute reductions seen, something along the lines of 15 mg/dl of Nitrate going in, and then 7 mg/dl coming out. Is that typical for these filters?

Thanks
Peter

The anion resin will remove both of the elemnts you are worried about but at what reduction I do not know. The MCL for Arsenic is .5 and you are reporting it to be .006. Why are you concertned about such a minute amount? I would concern myself with the Nitrates for sure because your level is above the MCL. My book shows you must use soft water with the anion resin or you could use an RO to reduce the nitrates. I will make a phone call tomorrow to find out more info.

thanks for the reply. I think I might have confused things because I didn't specify the units. My arsenic level is .006 mg/l or 6 mcg/l. The MCL from my reference lab is .010 mg/l or 10 mcg/l. So I am not yet at the level, but higher than I am comfortable with. thanks again. Peter

PS, I heard from the guy who is providing my media via Resintech that my 11 mg/l of Nitrate should be reduced to <1 mg/l, and my Arsenic should go from .006 mg/l (6 mcg/l) down to <.002 mg/l (<2 mcg/l) I am happy with those numbers, but I will have to test it again at a couple points during the run to see if anything is dumping. I still need to know if the As or NO3 will dump first. If its the NO3, then I can just track my water quality with periodic dip stick tests. If the As dumps first then it will be too late when I start dipping higher NO3 levels. Hopefully with the recommended regen frequency I won't have to worry about this.
