Guys,

What's the difference between the cabinet water softeners you get from HD, Lowe's, Sears v.s. the two piece models (i.e. culligan, rainsoft etc). Are there quality differences? Are they just harder to work on?

Most of the bigbox stores water treatment systems are solely based on the lowest bidder. Typically considered disposable units. Cabinet units are more difficult to maintain. Two piece units are far more flexible, larger capacity, and much easier to maintain.

Read many posts in this forum. You will find that most popular here are quality softeners with a separate brine tank, that you can buy. You will, for example, be able to download detailed service manuals and parts lists.
