What a nice example of asbestos sculpture!
Most boilers that vintage were coal-fired. Many were later retrofitted with an oil burner (as with this one) or even a gas-burner. Asbestos jacket insulation was also a common retrofit- otherwise the boiler room could feel like a sauna even when the rest of the place wasn't keeping up.
