Yes - I am referring to the valve inside the wall. I had to change it when I put new fixtures in. The old valves were not compatible with the new handles.

That must be it. The valves were pretty generic, sold at Home Depot. They did have black, flat washers. I'll try swapping out the washers. Thanks, C

well, plumbers came out, pulled the toilet, and snaked the hell out of the drain line. He didn't encounter any major obstructions (and oh - by the way, I found my rag in the garage). Everything seemed to be working well after the snaking - no bubbling when I run the shower... So, fast forward...
