I just bought a possible greensand filter off of craigslist for $100. It is a 2005 model only used for 4 years. It is not the typical greensand filter I am looking for but I need to know what it is? It has a Fleck 2510 part #40278 control head with a 948 pentair tank 9in x 48in and I determined it holds 1.0 cu ft of media. It has inlet and outlet with a back wash only. But I have no clue what is was used for or the media type in the tank? It has black coffee ground looking media in it with tube in the center. also numbers on control head sticker 231802-005001-0002C00
1. I need to determine media in it?
2. I have high iron that softener is not removing and bad rotten egg smell, not sure if iron bateria in water. I have constant yellowish stain in toilet and rust in tank. What is the best option for my system? What should I build out of what I have?
3. Water tests are super high. I called and got prices from $800 to $150. Is there cheaper ways. I had clear water come but they did not give me a the best water test. Said iron 2, hardness 20 and weighted water of 750. This is all he told me. My buddy got a print out I got a guy in a rush.

Dittohead has recommended http://www.ntllabs.com/index.html a few times. They suggest you phone to discuss.

I think you want to test for values of pH, iron, manganese as well as hardness.

"Watercheck 1 & 2" for $102 seems to be the appropriate test. It includes sulfate value too.
http://www.watercheck.com/pdf/Watercheck_1_2_Sample_Report.pdf is a sample report. I find the "Min. Detection Level" for Hardness to be be ridiculously insensitive.

I used e-watertest.com The test included a lot more stuff that all came back nd=not detected. I felt the 39 days total to order kit, get kit in mail, fill and mail next day(Friday), arrive there Monday, and get email result "20 business days" was long. I have no clue as to the turnaround times for the other lab.

And the guy who gave you hardness and iron numbers was helpful. You gave him $50 for the service? :)

In inspecting your tank, you might see if there is any GPM sticker on there for the backwash rate.

I would think you would want to find a media effective at iron and sulfur. That would probably need a solution draw. My unit draws a 10% bleach solution for a rinse during each regen cycle.

Black coffer grounds... could be GAC. I would replace the media if it has been sitting for extended periods of time. You could go with a simple chlorine injection system ahead of the equipment, HN55 Chemilizer pumps are cheap, or the good old Chlorine Pellet systems are cheap. A contact tank would also be recommended but many DIY's add it later if needed to give the chlorine time to do its job.

These are many ways to treat water, but we need to start with an accurate water test.

What kind of softener do you have? Can you post a picture of it?

What is GAC? I am working on getting a water test done. I know roughly my hardness is 20-25 and ph 7.3 and I have sulfer but not sure how much. I need to know what media I should use to build my own system and any modifications I need to make? I see that I may need to add chlorine filter in future so i will prepare for it. Do I need a large carbon take after iron tank or can I use blue whole house filter from like home depot with carbon filter to remove chlorine? I will post pics shortly.

Sorry about that. GAC stands for Granular Activated Carbon. It is commonly used for the removal of chlorine, pesticides, organic chemicals and much more. It is inexpensive and highly effective. It can help reduce the sulfur smell, but without pre-oxidation it doesnt tend to last very long. Pre-oxidation can be air injection, chlorine, ozone, hydrogen peroxide etc.

Lets get a water test done then we can be more specific. Also post some pictures of your existing equipment. lastly, please do not buy the water treatment equipment from HD. There are too may high quality systems out there at a slightly higher price available that will serve you much better.
