I’m hearing more and more about germs and bacteria being put into the air by flushing a toilet that’s just been used. They say the water mist of a flushed toilet carries these things and they contaminate the surrounding area. Is this true and if it is how bad is really? Is there anything I can do about this? Are there any toilets or any other product that will make my wife feel better about this problem?

Yes it is true, but, each toilet would be different and there is no telling to what degree each toilet does it, if at all.

It has been going on ever since there were toilets.

Your body fights germs constantly, in or out of the bathroom.

If you practice sensible, realistic, cleanlyness and hygene I can't see a problem under normal circumstances.

I watched a program that showed that water out of a toilet had less bacteria than a kitchen counter top.

If you watched American Inventor they had a guy who invented a filter for the purpose of cleaning the germs, but, the germs still got out, fewer, but they got out, and the filter will bejust 1 more thing to change every so often and repair when it breaks.

  3. I Love Them Little Germs

    the reason I LOVE GERMS.......

GERMS are one of the biggest reason I make such great money every day !!!

Everyone is AFRAID to GET DIRTY.....so they pay me BIG BUCKS to keep
from having to touch --- those little nasties.....

AFRAID of whats lurking EVERYWHERE around you.....and within you too!!

microbes here and there......you are literally breathing in microbes

    with every breath you take......

Some people are totally freaked out about germs

and I have actually ran into a few souls that were literally 100% NUTS!!!!

cleaning everything in their house every day..... takeing 3 baths a day.......

So you can immagine what they do when filthy plumber walks into their

temple of cleanlyness and pulls a long black smelly hair ball out of their

bathtub and presents it to them to show them what was down their drain!!!! LOL

NOW THATS A FUN THING TO DO!!!!!

    so, .......in conclusion.........

its just great that peopel in the USA are
PHOBIC and totally scitzo nuts about
    germs

lets keep them that way... its good for business

    Great comments, Mark!

From my point of view, the only practical change I have made is to move the toothbrushes as far from the toilet as possible. Helps keep them from dropping in, too.

Sharper Image makes a UV powered toothbrush sanitizer if it is really a concern for you. Note, pressure assist toilets tend to splash more than gravity flush jobs...

The germs (bacteria and viruses) that come out of the toilet just came out of the user. We are all full of coliform bacteria. We are immune to the stuff that is in us.

Now about plumbers; I suspect that all of you have your hepatitis immunizations. Most "civilians" don't have them.

A greater risk is what comes on your food. Greens imported from south of the border are handled by people with minimal sanitary facilities. Most raw poultry is contaminated with salmonella. Grinding beef is a process that mixes any fecal coliform that gets on the carcass during the slaughtering process and puts it where it will be in the middle part of your medium rare hamburger.

    germs

Also to add to Marks comments: I've been in and out of three to six or seven different houses every day for thirty years and into so many types of unsanitary conditions, that I believe that kept me immune to many things. Almost never miss work because of sickness.
  8. plumberr and germs

    Plumbers have GREAT immunity systems....
I have cuts all over my hands, and still have to
    do my job......

Along the same lines, it is amazeing how nasty

more than half the public lives. I would not let my DOG

lay on the couch of half the houses I go into..

If my next customer KNEW from where I just came from

they probably would not allow me into their house....

I do wipe my shoes off and brush off very well

In our town, people are willing to pay a premium to
have Plumbers come to their home that claim to
be "clean" and they are willing to pay a high
    premium for that HYPE.
Like $1400 for a 40 gallon Water heater.

I suppose they do have a great gimmick here.......
you are certanly trying to cater to the higher end of the market...

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

The IRONY HERE is that the filthy pigs I see every day
actually have better IMMUNITY to germs becasue they
    LIVE in them..

The Phobic clean public that keeps their homes totally Sterile
and keeps their kids from playing in the mud probably
are allergic to everything....have a very poor immunity system

So, If a birdflue pandemic ever came though,
guess who has a better chance of surviveing??

    Mr Clean or Mr Piggey??

MPM your right about all the cuts and never being sick. My family will have the latest flu or what have you that is going around but I am rarely sick and if I do get something it lasts only a day or 2.
  10. germs from customers........

I havent had a cold this year yet, and I have LITERALLY
walked through the valley of death...a number of times.........

Their is Nothing better than getting a service call from someone
is off work for a few days that has gotten the flu and decides
to get a bunch of little projects around the house taken care of

WHILE THEY ARE ON THEIR DEATH BED

    that really pisses me off,
I have taken a spray bottle of LYSOL
with me before and hosed down the place

and I dont care what they say about the pine cone scent....

they cant smell it...they are too sick.

    anyway, its FREE of charge.

The Japanese are the Worst! When selling a lot of product to the japanese I found out more little nuances about their culture than I really cared too.

And one of those..is how incredibly prissy and obsessive *some* Japanese women can be.

There was a product that was taken orally by the girls there that was heavily advertised a number of years ago.
Taken daily it claimed to eliminate all odor from pooping and (and presumably) farting as well.

    This is true.

To be germ and odor free is apparently next to Godliness.
OTOH they are all packed together like sardines over there..

    :D

Yeah and the one thing that I wont deal with is someone who calls with a backed up toilet and when I get there they tell me it has been that way for a week but they had to use it and it is full to the top.

I turn around a walk out.

    Doesn't happen much but............

    water mist, what germs

I would like to thank all the members for there replies to the water mist with germs question. So the way I see it is this is not a big problem, as long as things are kept clean and sanitary. The germs and bacteria are part of the territory and that’s just the way it’s going to be. Thanks again.

I would imagine that our past generation breathed in more bacteria and germs everytime they went to the outhouse than what we pick up by flushing. I guess a positive way to think is that by flushing, we're getting our own germs, and by using an outhouse, we would be breathing every germ that has been deposited there.

I used to work with social workers on child neglect and abuse cases, saw that a lot and took the pictures to prove it. Got to be a real expert on describing various and sundry stenches in court. Then there were the people who'd use the bathtub (which they never used for bathing anyway), sink, floor heating vent, convenient corner of the room.....at least a bucket they could empty. And of course, the dog gets all the blame, but no explanation for why the didnt clean it up, nor how a dog the size of a squirrel could produce a cubic yard of poo, even if it wasnt chained up outside on a circle of bare mud.

    I threw up frequently.

I think they covered the aerial toilet germ menace on the TV show "Mythbusters"
