I just replaced my 16 year-old AO smith with a new AO smith water heater. Now that I have it installed, I realize I need to add an expansion tank after never having one in my house, built in 1996. My question is about the valve I replaced on the cold inlet pipe to replace the original valve. I grabbed a stop valve sweat with the arrow without thinking and now I question whether or not that is good/bad for the water heater?? Whether it should be replaced? I'm trying to correct any mistakes if I have to go cutting pipe for the new expansion tank.

Sounds like you used an improper valve and installed it backwards. unnessesary tubulance reduced flow maybe , valve might wear out quicker, but I wouldnt expect problem with the heater. When you install your xtank change that valve out to one that belongs there no biggie

If you installed a gate valve or a flat washer type, they must be installed in the correct position for the water flow.

Thanks for the replies. The stop valve is in the correct flow direction; my concern was with the expansion tank on the cold inlet; if the stop valve would restrict the operation of the expansion tank?? I bought the new valve and will install it, just in case.

Do you have a check valve? gate valves and ball valves dont matter you have installed the wrong valve or arent explaining something where it can be understood

Your fine a expansion tank for a water heater normally doesn't have water flowing into with full force. Gradually as the heater temp goes up the water expanded water would flow into it unless someone would be using the hot water.
