aged neighbor has a home that was connected to sewer system 15 years ago, to the street sewer in front yard.. she has water in her sloped back yard starts 30 ft from house. plumbing under her house looks like all connected together and piped toward front of house. .

what dye should I buy to put in her toilets to be sure that the water is not from her toilets or wash machine.
thanks. and where would a homeowner buy some?
Thanks

I would use

Fluorescent Tracing Dye Free

URL being sent by PM...

I am not involved with the seller. Dye is liquid, and is in a special bottle that helps measure out liquid.

If the sewer exits the front of the building and the water is 30' from the house in the rear, you are going to need a LOT of tracing dye, because it is going to be absorbed by the ground long before it reaches that area. And logically, I would say it is almost impossible for your scenario to be the problem.

I would use Cool-aid , Then you have something to drink while you watch.

You could also use Yeast and sniff for CO2.

Good Luck.

Does she have a sump pump? Is it possible that the gutters are piped to a french drain in that area? Does the water in the yard strongly correlate with rain?

If you flush dye, it would be best to [also] observe the sewer through a manhole downstream in the street sewer. The local sewer department might be happy to cooperate.

I used dye to see where a glazed tile taking water from my gutters was draining to.
