Sewer gas/trap question

I'm currently remodeling our powder room and I plan to replace the floor and toilet. After I remove the toilet and put a rag in the trap to close off the sewer gases, how long can I leave it like this before I put my new toilet on? Is it ok to leave it like this for a couple weeks before I get the new toilet on, or is this unsafe?
