My neighbor has some poplar trees that have huge root systems (and they grow quickly). How will these roots effect the septic system? The trees are 10 or 15 feet form my septic system.

Will I need to do something with the system at some point?

Depends on how close to tank and drainfield and the quality of the pipe joints. If all joints are water tight, the roots will not know that the drain lines are there. If the trees are close to the tank the roots will enter at the lids and at the joints where pipe enters and exits the tank. If they are close to the drainfield, then think of that as shot.
