Replacement Handle for American Standard Tub/Shower

I have an old American Standard tub/shower in my tenant's bathroom and the handle (controlling water on/off and temperature) broke recently. Looking to buy a replacement handle but I cannot identify the right piece amongst all the choices available in the market. Any help would be much appreciated.

A Delta shower handle might be the right size for it.

Does that opening (cut out) extending past the trim plate concern you?

Won't water get in there and go behind the wall?
If so, maybe this is the time to get a new larger trim plate (with handle) that covers everything.
