I know if you put a pipe in a hole or notch in a stud or other member it has to have a metal plate on the sides less that 1.5 " from the edge of the stud. I see in a DIY plumbing book that pipes ran parallel to the studs have to have protection for the entire length that is within 1.5 of the edge. In other words they say don't fasten the pipe to the stud but space it 1.5 " away from it and fasten it to a cross piece between the studs. I know that is true on electrical wires but the distance is 1.25 " so we stack the wires on top of each other so to stay in the center of the stud. I cant find anything in the IRC plumbing code about protecting pipes parallel to studs. all I find is for pipes passing thru studs and plates. Does any one know if the DIY book is correct ?
