And that is why you are a handyman and not a plumber.

Doesn't 100% guarantee that the person knows what they're doing though. I'm continually amazed, and disappointed, by the lack of care, knowledge and expertise so called professionals have. My recent experience first and 2nd hand:
- auto mechanics (even specialists)
- doctors/hospitals
- professors/teachers.
- HVAC workers

Uggh. These days if you can it's usually better to do it yourself.

His point is, and we have covered this ground many times on this forum, that, within any group, there is an entire spectrum of competency ranging from extremely incompetent to extremely competent.

This is true for handymen as well as for plumbers.

As a property manager, I was forced to use some very bad licensed plumbers because the owners were cheap as hell. These "professional" plumbers would fight and curse and throw tools around. There were rivers of solder dripping off pipes, and some of their creations reminded me of something Rube Goldberg might have created.

During this current economic crisis, more people will be turning to handymen, so you're going to have to get used to it. Once the economy improves, a lot of handymen will disappear from the scene, but there will always be a niche for them.

During this current economic crisis, more people will be turning to handymen,

. . and the lowest bidder plumber too - assuming they have time to get quotes.

(not that the lowest bidding plumber == one that cuts corners but I would guess the percentage that do would be higher at that price point)
