Dishwasher siphoning water

One day we no longer had any hot water and came to the conclusion that the culprit was our dishwasher. It was continuously siphoning all the hot water out of the tank right into the drain. That would trigger the tank breaker to go off. So, we fixed the dishwasher setup and made the proper high loop at the back of the machine and we even added an extra loop in the basement. BTW our washer is hooked up directly through the floor to the sewage pipe in the basement. There is also an air intake pipe in the basement setup. It worked fine for 3 weeks and after a power outage started siphoning again... Any ideas?

The air gap needs to be at the highest point not it the basement. The only way it can drain your hot water tank is if the water valve is stuck open or if your dishwasher is running and trying to keep its tub full. You didnt say if you think its siphoning during use or not.Is it direct connected with out the proper P-trap?

If it has a CPU you may want to unplug it, to reset the CPU.

It sounds like your Fill Valve is stuck On / Open.

Good Luck on your project.

It siphons non-stop even when its off. It's always draining the hot water tank so we have to close the main valve to the dishwasher to save the hot water. There is no p-trap. Like I said we have the high loop at the back and we made a second loop in the basement (dishwasher repair guy told us to set it up that way).

You need to check your fill valve operation.

The only place the dishwasher gets hot water is thru its fill valve.

It would need to be stuck open, and it is not siphoning water, it just passes water thru it.

If you open the dishwasher door, do you see water ?

Siphoning is from the drain to the dishwasher. It is not siphoning to be passing hot water from the dishwasher to the drain continuously. The dishwasher is defective. You need a new dishwasher or a better repair guy.

There is water in the hole where the filter is.

Can you here water going thru it when you have the water to it turned on ?
We turned the water back on and I even started the dishwasher. It seems to be OK at the moment. But now my water heater breaker (directly on the tank) keeps going off, even when I shut the valve to the dishwasher.

Water heater is defective. Repair or replace. If the water heater is 20 years old, replace it. If it is 2 years old, repair it.

Where are you located? Different countries have different setups, and what may be legal and 'normal' in one, may not be in another.

In the USA, you DW must drain above the p-trap. We don't use that many point of use hot water systems, so may not be familiar with what you have or how it works. The DW should only be drawing hot water during certain cycles while it is running. IF it is drawing hot water when it is off, the DW is defective, and that has nothing to do with how it is draining. I've seen a few DW where you had a manual fill valve - you filled it to a certain point, then shut the water off. The valve may be leaking. Haven't seen one of these in ages, though.

The dishwasher MAY siphon the water out of the "tub", but ONLY the water the fill valve puts in to it. The only way it could "siphon all the hot water out", (which is an incorrect statement by the way), would be if the fill valve did not shut off and the water kept running in to the machine.

If your drain line is installed so the water can flow out of the machine, (it would not be a siphon), then the water level control would never turn off the incoming water, and THAT would use all the hot water, but it would be normal for a bad installation.

If the water heater is popping the breaker, then that sounds like another problem.

Taking the Dishwasher out of Eco mode should force it to heat the water, so that the water heater does not need to. Did you turn up your water heater temperature when you installed the dishwasher ?

If water was going thru the dishwasher fast enough to drain your water heater, You would hear the water going thru it.

quote; You would hear the water going thru it.

You would also SEE it when it overflowed the door, because the pump would not be running, UNLESS, as I stated, it is VERY POORLY installed and the water can run down the drain as fast as it is entering the machine.
