Copper pipe crack

The attached picture shows a copper pipe for an outside shower. I'd like opinions on the cause as the three different owners as we are not in agreement.

After the repair, prevent the freeze damage in the future. You can perhaps figure a way to use an air compressor to clear the water out in the fall.
