Attached is an image of what I want to do: Essentially cap the top port of the valve and run the line from the bottom port to a diverter and then to the shower and hand shower, keeping the supply valve in the normal orientation. Is there a reason this might be a bad idea or won't work? A Kohler rep didn't seem to know.

That valve and most single handle tub/shower valves are designed to have higher flow through the bottom port. In the case of the 8304, the valve body itself is ported the same top and bottom. The cartridge has a removable anulus that you switch from bottom to top if you're installing back to back valves and need to swap hot/cold sides.

In reality, it doesn't really matter which you use since you're not likely to be able to use more water than either of the ports can provide. But using the bottom port is perfectly fine and the direction that water is going first from the cartridge.

Hey, wait a minute.

This is awkward, but...
