Hello, I am going to be remodeling a shower adjacent to a sauna in my basement which was originally installed in the early 70s.
The drain for the shower is a bit odd. It is a three inch (not 2 inch) pipe set below the surrounding concrete. Immediatlely surrounding the drain is a "bowl" area cut concave into the concrete flloor around the pipe about 6 inches in diameter. The actual drain cover is large - 7 inches in diameter. Then sorrounding that is a 10"" square of some material I cant identify (maybe an iron plate) flush with the concrete and immobile.
So basically, ignoring the 10" square and the odd 7" cover and bowl for a moment, I really just have a 3" pipe for a shower. The base of the shower is all concrete surrounded by concrete barriers on all four sides of a foot or so high.
There is not a good slope so I intend to simply mud in a proper slope around the drain, or I may use one of the flloor pan kits.
But in any case, what do I do with this odd drain? Perhaps fill the "bowl" area around the drain with concrete to bring it level with the rest of the floor? And does anyone sell a 3 inch shower drain - I can't locate one. Or is there a way to use a standard shower drain in this set up? Or should I just try to find a new 7 inch cover plate and slope down to this weird existing set-up and tile?
By the way - this shower will barely be used, but it is there so I want to tile it and make it look nice.
Thanks for any help.
