The power comes in to a box with 2 outlets. The goal is to have one of the outlets on a switch. The switch is not in the same box (6 feet away from outlets). Does this require 3 wire to the switch?

    Thanks for any replies

No, it can be done with 2 wire.
Remark the white wire red or black and connect it to the incoming hot wire.
Connect the wire to one side of the switch, and take the black wire back to the receptacle, break the tab and connect the wire to the top or bottom half.

Will this make only half of the outlet switched or the entire outlet? There are 2 outlets and we want one switched and one not switched.

    Thanks for any replies

There are tabs between both the neutral screws and the hot screws. Leave the neutral tab intact. Put a pigtail on the incoming hot lead, break the tab on the hot side, run the hot lead to the outlet you want to be always hot, and the switch leg from the switch to the other. The other wire from the new 2-wire cable to the switch gets connected to the receptacle to provide the hot.
