Waste pipe

Above is a picture of the waste pipe I have coming out of the wall. It is definitely 1.5 inch. However, I purchased a new trap, and the nut (for lack of a better term) is too large for the threaded portion of the waste pipe. It just slips over them. Ignore the elbow in that product - I wont be using it.

Am I dealing with a difference in materials? What do I need to get (if I can) that will attach my new slip style lavatory drain to this weird sized threaded waste pipe?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Those union trap connections are generally manufacturer specific. If not the same brand it likely won't mate up. I would cut off the existing elbow and install a new tubular trap.

Is the OD of the pipe coming out of the wall 1.5 inches or 1.9 inches?

If 1.9 inches, why not cut the pipe, and cement on a hub trap adapter. Then use a slip joint trap (that is probably the same as a tubular trap). Those are available in black and chrome in addition to the popular white. Slip joint is much easier to install and adjust than a glued trap.

I think some jurisdictions don't allow slip joints downstream of the U of the trap, but those are fairly rare.
