We installed a Whirlpool softener this afternoon as a replacement for an existing one, and in the instructions, after the initial sanitation/recharge, they tell you to open a cold water tap and run at least 50 gallons of water, which will take at least 20 minutes. That's an awful lot of water down the drain! What would the reason for this be?

If you are on city water (chlorinated) then run a regular regen cyle and that is it. With well water, pour a 1/4 cup of non scented household bleach in the brine tank and run a regen cycle.
