Please have a look those two photos (Fireplace Opening 1 and Fireplace Opening 2): http://www.flickr.com/photos/lmei007/?saved=1

Why there is an opening at the bottom of the fireplace? what's that for?

I have ranch style house. There are two fireplaces, main floor and basement. Those photos show the one on the main floor.

thanks,

Of course, it is for ash disposal. If you go into the basement, you will probably find an access door on the chimney foundation, so that eventually, you can remove the accumulated buildup. Keeps the mess out of the living room.

If the basement is finished below that area you need to seal the hole so no embers ever get down there and start a fire.
