When I travel, the first thing they tell you is to make sure the bottled water is factory fresh. The seal on the bottle should be unbroken. If it's already broken, it most likely has been refilled and should not be used. There are many places I've been where you had to be very careful about what you ate and what you drank. In the evenings with dinner I would sometimes opt for low alcohol beer. The pilgrims used to drink beer for that reason too. When they first came to the America's, they were amazed that water from a stream was safe to drink. It wasn't safe in Europe at that time in 1620.
One of the earliest businesses was to take sea water and boil off the water to make salt. Salt was very important for preserving back then.
