What is this vertical Galvanized pipe?

Can anyone tell me what this vertical pipe is with the cap? It is part of my galvanized water line? Is it a shutoff valve? If I remove the top cap and can't get it back on tight am I going to have water issues with leaks? Thank you

You'd have to ask the person who put it there. If you don't want to open up a can of worms then just bury it back up.

I think you'd have a hard time getting it off, and for what?

No its not a shut off valve, its a cap. It might break up trying to loosen cap

If I had to guess, I would say that it could be an old gas line to a remote grill.
We do encounter them from time to time.
It would be hard to make an accurate assessment with out knowing the actual location.
Is it in a backyard.
