Well pump wiring question

I have a one HP 230 volt well pump that has a "pigtail " coming out of the pump that has one white wire, one green, one red and one black. I am trying to wire to a generator using 3 wires that are black, red, and green. The plug for the generator is 4 prong and plugs into a 230 volt receptacle at the generator. I tied the white and green wires from the well pigtail together and then to the green wire going to the plug, I then tied the green wire to the NEUTRAL terminal of the plug. The black and red wires were tied to the "hot" terminals at the plug. I tried the pump and it would not start, would bog down the generator, but try for about 10 seconds and trip the breaker at the generator. The generator is 9000 watts starting and 7500 running watts capacity. After about 5 tries, I think the pump burned out because the pump won't try to start at all and the generator does not bog down or trip the breaker.

SO, how should this be wired? Should I have taken the white/green wires from the pump pigtail to the ground terminal at the plug? Do I need 4 wires to the plug instead of 3? Should I have just not tied the green and white wires out of the pump together and just run the green wire to the ground terminal? Any suggestions appreciated.

If the pump is 240volts then there should only be two hots and a ground (3 wires) coming out from it.
If a device/appliance is 120v/240v then there would be two hots, neutral and ground (4 wires).

Can you please take a picture of the nameplate on the pump and post it here so we can see the specs on it. This is what we would go by when wiring it.

Look closely at the receptacle on the generator and see what is imprinted on the receptacle. Should start with something like "NEMA xxxx".

Normal "3 wire" pumps would have yellow, red, black and green. There would be a controller box between the pump and the generator. The motor would have a run winding and a start winding, with the yellow wire connecting to both windings.. You will have to get directions, and a matching controller, for your pump.

There is a possibility that the motor could be bad. Manufacturer can give you the resistance of the windings. Call their tech line.
