I recently replaced the pressure tank with a ruptured bladder (yay, no more short cycling.) My pump is about 27 years old. Hopefully I can get at least another 10 years out of it (it used to provide water to the house, but now it's simply used for occasional irrigation.)

When I eventually do have to replace the thing, I was wondering if I could replace the pump with a pump that doesn't have a drive line. I have a STA-RITE model ALC-30. I've attached a pdf that shows the installation configuration that was used. https://app.box.com/s/2hku9g3m8a8lqpagdmip

For some reason installation configuration G was used instead of configuration D like most of my neighbors have. Is the drive line essential?

The two pipe configuration with the "drive line" is required if the pumping water level is deeper than about 20'. With water levels less than 20' a single pipe can be used.
