Lots of things can be involved in water treatment systems.

Water softeners, conditioners, whole house filters, carbon filters, osmosis systems, etc.

If you're looking for options for your house, talk to a local plumber. They often know the water quality of the areas they service, and can offer advice as to what other residents tend to use or need. You can let them know what you're looking for out of your water, and any problems you have that a treatment system might address.

In my professional opinion, don't go for the big names in water filtration instalation. Stick with a good plumber. The big guys get you into service contracts that all but the pickiest of water connoisseurs really don't need. The occasional service issue is way cheaper than long term contracts.
