Water Soluble Flux

I can't find a definitive answer in any threads concerning whether Water Soluble Flux will eat holes in copper pipe or not. Does anybody really know will it eat holes if it is left on in a dry area? Will it eat holes if it is on a pipe buried in the ground where ground water my move across it?
