I have hard, rusty, water from a 140' deep well. Also every year or so, I start getting rotten egg smell, so I sterilize the well and pipes with bleach. I am using a simple filter, but the kids drink bottled water. I am thinking of installing a water softener and one of those triple filter set ups under the sink to get better than bottled water quality. What is a good brand? Interested in your experiences out there.

If you buy a name brand type (proprietary) softener, you'll pay thousands for it and then you are dependent on the local dealer for parts and service. At whatever they want to charge you for both.

An independent online or local dealer does not sell name branded softeners but they sell name brand component parts. The most important part of a softener is the control valve. I suggest the Clack WS-1. If you are handsome or handy, you can totally rebuild a Clack WS-1 and have the water back on in less than 30 minutes. It was designed to be that quick and easy. IMO that makes it ideal for a DIYer, or anyone else that will want to change a part on their softener when needed instead of calling a dealer out to service it.

So do ya wanna be an independent DIYer or dependent on the local dealer and simply make phone calls and write increasingly larger checks as time goes by? ;)

I bought a Kinetico softner. It cost about $2000. I also put in an RO drinking water system on the sink in the kitchen. I would not buy Kinetico again. They absolutely ream you for parts and service.
