We are going to be away on vacation for 16 days. I am wondering what I should do with my water softener and UV system? We live in a cold climate so there is risk of pipes freezing should we lose heat.

I plan to shut off the well pump, turn off the water heater, and set the heat to 60 degrees.

Should I unplug my water softener and UV system? I think the softener will try to regenerate while we are gone, and with no water coming in, would that be bad? Or is it worse for the resin to sit for 16 days without regenerating?

EDIT - sorry, just realized that I posted this in the wrong sub-forum.

Trying to regen with no pressure would not be bad except that the softener thinks it regenerated. If there is water in the pressure tank, the softener would get part way through a regen, and that could be a bit of a problem if the pressure tank is still supplying water past the backwash. 14 days without a backwash should not hurt the resin, unless this unit is handling significant iron. What is your DO (day override) setting? Doing an immediate regen just before shutting things down should make things OK, even if the softener was handling significant iron.

Regarding whether to keep the UV powered, I don't know. Seems to me that keeping it on would be safer, but maybe not needed.
