Hi guys,

I'm not really handy with this stuff so I need some help please.

I'm installing a Rheem 42,000 grain water softener, and I'm having some trouble running the drain hose. The idea that I'm inclined to work with now isn't the best, but most likely the ONLY option to do in the given circumstance.

The water softener will be installed in my garage directly with my main water, but there is no drainage anywhere in the garage, or outside the garage, the closest ones are on my lawn and they're going to be 50-60ft away. I have clay soil, and I dug a big hole to test the drainage, it simply will not work as well.

My only option now would be to run the drain hose to the drain pipes under the sink in my restroom. Which, the total length would be about 30ft, and that's what the manufacturer stated as the maximum length. (From user manual: NOTE: Avoid drain hose runs longer than 30 feet. Avoid elevating the hose more than 8 feet above the floor. Make the valve drain line as short and direct as possible.)

Here are some pictures of my garage and notations on how I plan to do this:

From Fig.1, the drain hose outlet from the back of the water softener is 42" from the ground, then it will travel 5ft up (since the user manual says it can go up 8ft, so I'm thinking this would be fine?). The drain hose is 1/2" OD and 3/8" ID? since the user manual states like this: http://prntscr.com/1f0xcu9. Then continue along the top of the garage from the garage door side to the opposite end.

From Fig.2, then the drain hose will travel the entire length of the garage which is 20ft, I'm most likely going to drill a hole through the column there (1" maybe, since there are 2 drain hoses that needs to run) I'm thinking this would have better pressure going through than having to go under then coming back up. Continue down, then go down the wall which is 80 inches, then drill a hole there since the restroom sink is behind the wall there.

From Fig.3, this shows the place where I'm planning on drilling a hole that will reach behind the part that's under my sink.

From Fig.4, this is under my sink. I REALLY NEED SOME SUGGESTIONS HERE, as I'm no plumbing expert.. (I've only fixed little leak issues or change water faucets before.) I'm planning on changing out that white pipe to one that will be a T shape, so I can then connect some kind of elbow, then put an open stand-pipe, that's where I'll add 2 air gaps to flow the drained water into. I REALLY DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE??? Please any suggestions would be extremely helpful!

The reason why I'm doing this, is I'm thinking from the initial drain hose going up 5ft, then going across the ceiling would be 20ft, that's a total of 25ft.. I should still have enough water pressure.. then, once it starts to come straight down for 80 inches (6.67 ft), the pressure should INCREASE again? so I should be fine with this setup??

The system drains during "recharge" and it will drain about 45 gal. in 2.5 hours... so that's about 0.3 gpm of water flow. Based on the specification of the drain hose size... here are the parts that I'll be getting:

2 x air gaps for the 2 hoses.

2 x these pvc tubing with 3/8" ID (connecting from back of water softener all the way to the other end of the wall)

1 x 1/2" I.D. x 5/8" O.D. PVC Vinyl Tubing - 10 feet. This is due to the airgap's inlet size, seems like it can only insert something with 5/8" OD.

2 x Plastic Hose Barb Reducer Fitting 1/2" to 3/8, this is so I can convert the tubing to fit.

Here's a copy of the User Manual: https://images.thdstatic.com/catalog/pdfImages/e3/e39b8660-0fc7-46b9-9b32-c02428c3fb1c.pdf
  • I'm really not sure if this will work or not?
  • Are these the right parts to get?
  • Do you guys suggest me to use 90 degree angle fittings when I hit corners or that will reduce pressure too much?
  • For under the sink part, I'm just thinking this will work, but will it? and what will those parts be called so I can get them?
  • And what do you guys recommend for securing the pvc tubing to the ceiling and walls?
Any comments or help would be very appreciated, thank you!
