Hi Everyone,
I have a facility with some equipment that needs a the circulation of distilled water to cool the system, but our facilities water supply is too dirty and does not have adequate pressure.

Since we are a small company we are throwing around the idea of building a closed circulating pipe system based off some storage tanks and a well pump. We need a pressure of 35 psi and a flow rate of 16 gpm, so are looking at somewhere around the neighborhood of a 1 HP well pump. But we are not sure if we need a tank or not. The equipment would run only occasionally (15-45 minutes at 4 times a day). And if we need a pump, not sure what size at all to get. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

How hot do you think the water would get? A typical well pump expects the ground water to be cool-cold, not hot, and may overheat. A circulator is more likely to be able to be reliable with warmer water. Any closed system containing water will need an expansion tank to handle the volume changes with temperature. A well tank could probably do that, but again those aren't designed for hot water, so one, properly sized, for hydronic heating is probably called for. Depending on the heat load, you might need radiators to dissipate the heat and maybe fans to speed that up. It would depend on the amount of BTU's you need to get rid of and where you might dump that heat. If it was outside, then you'd potentially need to use antifreeze, or a heat exchanger with a loop with antifreeze in the outside loop (more likely if the equipment needs distilled water). Using copper probably wouldn't work if it needs to be distilled (essentially pure), since that would eventually have metals in it. Probably need plastic pipe or stainless steel to keep the distilled water 'pure'.
