I just bought a new washing machine for my son and daughter in law. The store will install it, but I need to disconnect the old one. That's not much of an issue as it just means turning off two shut-off valves and removing the old hoses. My concern is that the valves haven't been touched in 17 years (when the old washer was installed), and I expect that once I touch it, it will leak. (That's been true of every other valve I've touched in his house, inclued the main water shutoff). One option is to leave the valves untouched, and just turn off the main (now a new valve) and disconnect the hoses when the installers show up. Alternatively, if I do shut these valves off and then discover that they leak, how are they repaired or replaced? I've never seen a configuration exactly like this.

I would change the valves. 1/4 turn or a lever shutoff controlling both vales at once is what I used. The water to the washer gets shut after every use, never had a hose failure and don't want one. depending on where the machine sits might be a good time for a pan under it.

Those valves are sweat in. You should just need to shut them off and attach the hoses. If they drip tighten the packing just until the drip stops. It's the hex nut behind the handle where the handle stem goes into the valve body.
