I have been trying to change my vintage 1-3/8 iron tub drain but I could not find 1-3/8 rubber washer for the original brass slip nut . The rubber washers readily available both online and in hardware stores are for 1-1/4 and 1-1/2 slip nuts. I was thinking maybe I could use either 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 since the rubber would be compressed as I tighten the nut and hopefully would provide a good seal. Assuming this is a good idea which size would be better - the 1-1/4 or 1-1/2 ? If this will not work - where could I find the 1-3/8 rubber washer and if there are no such thing - what are other options out there for making a good seal ?
Attached is a pic of my original slip nut together with the readily available 1-1/2 and 1-1/4 rubber washers. Thank you very much in advance for your time and attention.

The links below may not be what you need. It might be worth a look.

I wonder if the old washer combined with some valve packing string would do the job. They sell that in white (which I suspect has PTFE) and in graphite.

@Reach4 - The old washer which looked like it was made of red rubber crumbled into a soft powdery substance and not usable. If nothing else works, I might try using the graphite string that I bought but it has to be with a new washer or maybe just tightly pack the string alone into the nut ? Thank you for your help.

Hj's suggestion of a washer sounds best. If a small width is needed, maybe an O-ring would work.

I don't know the joint, but I was picturing that you would wrap valve packing string around the pipe near where it will end up, and the nut tightening would do the packing of the packing.

@hj - I got this Brass Craft O-ring with 1-3/8 ID, 1-5/8 OD x 1/8 Wall from the local chain store. It fits perfectly inside the 1-3/8 slip nut.( Please refer to attached pic.)

Does this look anywhere near what a 1-3/8 washer should be ?? I hope this will do it. Thank you very much for your time.
