Hi everyone,
I'm new and am here in hopes to figure out what the heck is going on. I purchased a 1950's ranch home in upstate NY and the issue is that when the washing machine drains, the tub and toilet bubble, the toilet will eventually drain out. The previous owner was in the house for 10 years and always had the same issue, but never did anything about it. It drives me crazy.
The first thing I did was climb on the roof and ran a snake through to make sure there were no birds nests or anything blocking the vent (I get birds in the woodstove if I don't cover the pipe!) All seemed good there, I didn't run into anything. So...
I am currently in the process of remodeling the bathroom; removing the tub and putting in a shower. In the process of dealing with moving that drain, realized the washing machine drain is a hokey setup that comes down and then veers back up (like a literal checkmark) then over to connect in with the tub, about 8-10" past the vent stack. There is no actual p-trap on the drain. Needless to say, I will be fixing that. But before I do, would love y'all's advise as to whether I should also put in an aav, or if the p-trap - or lack thereof - is the issue. I should also note that the plumbing is in a crawlspace basement, so there is not a whole lot of room to get fancy.
I'm posting a crude diagram of the drains and vent pipe in the hope that someone will say 'aha.' Thank you all for your time and and advise you have to offer. Looking forward to running the laundry and not have the toilet drain out! lol K~
