I want to install a retrofit hot water recirculating pump, but not sure if it's best to install it under the furthest sink or at the water heater (and then add a sensor at the sink).
I already have an outlet under the sink so that's no problem.
I am not able to add a dedicated return pipe.
What are the pros / cons of each?
Thanks.

Adding a dedicated return pipe has 2 benefits.
  1. you can insulate the return and reduce heat loss
  2. you aren't dumping hot water into the cold system
I don't know if theres a benefit to whether the pump is located on the tank or under the sink as I don't install many in that manner, but I've heard of maintenance issues with the units mounted under the sink.. but then that was decades ago. All things being equal I would install the pump at the tank where the noise is reduced and chances of leaks damaging your house are lessened.
