I want to be able to turn the water on and off from outside the shower.
I also want to be able to turn the water on and off from inside the shower.

Think of the operation as a 3-way light switch -- I can turn it on outside before I get in and then off from the inside when I'm done. And, the next day turn it back on from outside...

Looking at the Delta diverters, the non-shared 3-function version seems to be able to do this if I hook up with two diverters in a sort of back to back fashion. Here are the 4 cases using the non-shared cartridge for the 3-function diverter. Has anyone done this? Can I depend on the diverter to act as a shutoff in the Fixture OFF cases and not dribble some water out without actually turning off the cartridge handle?

The American Standard 2-port diverter that I have needs to be lined up perfectly for it not to leak a bit. There are no stops on it so it's hit and miss.

Good luck. Sounds like the kind of project I would think of. A one of a kind thing that no one else has done and probably for good reasons.

As I understand it, a diverter is intended to choose which way the water flows, but not to seal a pressurized pipe. Your plan might work, but only if you turn the water on/off at the valve before/after showering. Otherwise, the diverters will dribble all night long.
