I'm performing a tub to shower conversion for my mother, and have a question on plumbing the drain. I've removed the tub and exposed the original drain line. The metal 1 1/2" line is made of a malleable metal which does not cut well, I'm guessing a leaded pipe. Below this is the PVC p-trap, which looks to be 2 to 2 1/2". I believe I should remove the metal line entirely and convert to 2" PVC drain, correct? How should I go about removing the metal piping and preparing the old PVC for the new drain?

The house is in Texas and was built in the late 70's.

Below is what I'm working with, you can see the PVC p-trap mostly covered by soil.

I also welcome any other feedback or suggestions.
