My girlfriend wants to replace her tub spout/diverter but we’re running into some size issues.

The pipe coming from the wall is not threaded. It’s heavy-walled steel and its OD is close to 27/32”, which, according to some Googling, would probably make it ½” galvanized pipe. The pipe protrudes 2” or so beyond the tile.

The existing spout was installed by the Department of Water and Power. It’s an auto-diverting unit that diverts to the shower when the water temp comes up to about 95 degrees. The installation contractor used a slip-fit spout that uses a metal collar and some other fittings including a tapered rubber washer that acts as a compression fitting of sorts.

It seems the best solution would be to replace the tub spout stub out with pipe that’ll work with conventional, current spouts, but the fear is that something will break inside the wall and we’ll end up having to tear tile out, which isn’t in the financial cards at the moment.

Does anyone know of a slip-on spout that’ll fit this pipe or another perhaps another solution?

I have to GUESS that you could unscrew the stub to get back to normal 1/2" pipe fitting in the wall. The stub out with 1/2" brass.

See if there is access from the other side of the wall. If that is a linen closet, there may already be an access panel.

That's what I'd like to do, but there have been problems in the past with the old galvanized pipes and fittings breaking so we're looking for a slip-mounting spout in this non-conventional size.

I personally wouldn't but you could possibly use a dresser coupling if you had too and can find one that fits without being too long....
