Hi All. We have a new build house and are doing some tub to shower conversions. The house is in AZ on post tension slab. I had a plumber come out today to give me a quote and I didn't quite understand why he was saying we'd need to cut into the slab. I've always been advised with post tension, you absolutely do not want to to cut the concrete. Here are some photos showing what we are working with.

Can someone please explain to me the best way to deal with this 1.5" drain to 2" conversion? I was under the impression that the pipe could be cut where I have marked a red line and a long sweep 90" could be introduced. What am I missing? Why would we need to cut into the slab?

Many thanks!

We are hoping to use either KBRS shower basin or Schluter shower pan if that makes a difference. Thank you.

Showers universally use and are required to be 2". That includes the p trap and drain line.
Have I seen dirtbag situations where someone tried to get away with smaller, yes. Did it work? sort of...not well.

2" for the shower is the UPC requirement, but the IPC does allow 1-1/2" for less than 5.7 gpm of showerheads.

What the dimensions of the new shower going to be, and what sort of drain? If the drain is going to be basically over the existing tub waste and overflow, then I expect you could make things work with the existing trap and without cutting concrete. Otherwise, you'll need to move the trap and cut into the concrete.

Cheers, Wayne
