Helloes,

A neighbor has water leaking around his tub drain.
I am unable to remove the flange, the shoe is galvanized steel
i believe.

I bought a stopper/flange from the Borg that is for 1 3/8" shoes with
a threaded bushing for 1 1\2" ones. I was planning to cut out
the old flange by any means necessary but i sense the new one
is slightly small.

I called my local Park Supply plumbing outfit and was told every shoe
is unique size and thread meant to fit a specific flange.

Is that accurate? The ones sold at Home Depot do not have any printing
such as 'fits Delta series whatever'.

I think i will just replace with the kit that includes the overflow and tee
anyways.

How do i connect the pvc to the galvanized piping? Internet searching
shows something like a hose over both with hose clamps.

Can I do this just below the tee as that is where I have access/room to maneuver.

Also, near the drain flange the porcelain is missing in a small spot
with iron showing that seems solid/not rusted through. Putty
would cover it if i am a little sloppy, just a skosh of raw iron showing
outside the flange diameter. Is there anything i can/should put on the
exposed metal?

Finally, the pipe from the shoe to the tee to my eye looks like it is going
slightly uphill. There is a little water left in the elbow of the shoe after
running water.
If I drop the tee will that mess with how the shoe fits with the tub?
I think maybe 1/4 inch drop would make it level. It is about 18 inches
long so maybe another 1/4 inch drop?

Sorry for lack of pith. Thanks for reading and any help.

most nearly all of the ones I run into are 1 1/2" but have used the bushing before.
Sometimes repair work is a real bear to get right . a judgement call on the teeny bit of back fall. if you are prepared to get involved and replace everything lower that tee.
If tub is pressed steel you might be in for trouble with the rust spot. cast iron tub should be ok

Thanks Jeff,

Just to clarify, I thought the bushing was 1 1/2 and without
it was 1 3/8?

If I do replace the tee and lower it I was concerned doing
that would tilt the shoe flange assembly as well. That is
unwarranted? If I tighten the flange snug then there
is enough play to lower the tee?

And then a pvc to galvanized coupling, i can use a Fernco
coupler? And i can do that below the tee? That is the only place I can cut the galvanized
without opening the ceiling below.

Thanks again

yes the bushing has 1 1/2 od and 1 3/8 id . should be able to pull it down 1/4 or 1/2 inch in 18 inches but it will pull overflow down as well sounds like just replace the complete assembly down to just below the tee
