Trouble with old Sayco tub faucet

It's leaking & I need to replace the valve. I removed the handle cover & the screw that holds the handle in place, but can't remove the handle. Am I missing something? I don't think so- I think it's just stuck. I pulled hard on it but am afraid to damage the water pipe in the wall. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Tap it "out and off" or use a handle puller.
