I have probably broken some rule about using new products, but before I throw in the towel and put a regular trap on, I figured I'd ask the experts.
This Trap Genie keeps leaking from where the lavatory tailpiece enters the top, where the metal nut is. It's not leaking from the threads, water is coming up along the tailpiece where the 1-1/2" to 1-1/4" reducing gasket is at. I've replaced the gasket, re-tightened, re-tweaked, re-aligned.

After running water full on, hot+cold, water eventually works up out, spills over the metal nut, 3-4 drops at a time. Water is working it's way back up the tailpiece. Could I shorten the tailpiece? It's about 4 inches long from that locknut that's threaded onto the drain body.

Or is this a venting problem that I'm never going to overcome? The drainpipe into the wall immediately elbows, and the vertical vent is about 4 inches after the elbow. The reason I haven't just put on a regular trap yet is the vanity cabinet bottom drawer clears the Trap Genie, and the top drawer is pre-fab notched just right for this trap. A white plastic P-trap requires me to start cutting drawers. That becomes a wife problem, etc.

Any thoughts? Thank you.

Has that maybe been renamed to SinkGenie?

Did you add the shiny nut yourself? You are describing a leak over the top of that nut. If you attach a tissue/TP around the piece above that nut, and get your leak, you could make sure the leak is not coming from above the nut.

I am interested in that dull chrome piece that attaches to the tailpiece. I guess that is a metal tailpiece extender. Make sure that the OD on that is 1.25.

Regarding the reducing washer, did you try more than one type?

Yes, it is actually a SinkGenie - It seems I made up the 'Trap' part.

On and off several times, trying both the hard plastic and heavy-duty rubber reducing washers, I eventually switched out the nut too, from the plastic one that comes with the product. On one re-do, I even doped up the pipe around the washer and nut. Didn't seem to make a difference. Cleaned it all off on the next re-do.

The tailpiece extender came with the drain assembly, and I did find myself wondering if there's just enough non-tolerance, but the packaging stated it is for 1-1/4". A tape measure seems to verify that. That tailpiece extender has never been wet up towards where it attaches to the drain body, and dipping a corner of a napkin along where the tailpiece enters the shiny nut and reducing washer instantly soaked up water.

That spot is close to 1-3/4" above where the water should be leaving the side discharge of the unit. And the weirdest part, no lie, I'm not making this up - sometimes the water doesn't push out from around the tailpiece until after I've shut the running water off. Like 1-2 minutes later.

A tape measure seems to verify that.
Circumference of 4.56 inches ( about 4-9/16)?

Verify the reducing washer ID is about the same as the tailpiece extender.

Maybe try two reducing washers at once.

OMG, thanks for the TP tip, Reach! - I wrapped that napkin around the threads above the dull metal tailpiece nut, just below the locknut, ran the water for 2 minutes, the backside was soaked.

I assume it's been leaking from above, slowly pooling around the shiny nut. One more question - anyone ever caulk or putty that beveled gasket that the locknut holds in place? Or do I just need to tighten it up?

In hindsight, I wrapped my fingers around the tailpiece once, and fingers got wet. I had already committed mentally to the water leak at the reducing washer, figured my fingers got too close to that slip joint.

The water may be coming from even farther up. Water can spiral down the threads from the top. The trick is to apply plumbers putty or pipe dope into the threads, and then put the nut back on.
