Trap Arm Length Question

Hello,

How far into the joint assembly should the trap arm penetrate?

I will need to cut the trap arm but I don't want to cut it incorrectly.

Here's a picture of what I am asking. I will have a trap arm adapter (1-1/2" to 1-1/4").

Normally I use 1.5" traps on lavs and sinks. The traps I pick up have a reducing slip joint washer that goes from 1.5" to 1-1/4". You can also get a trap adapter that reduces there too.

On a glued fitting you can figure 1/2 the pipe size. So a 1.5" fitting would fit into the hub fitting 3/4" of an inch.

I think the question is how far does the tubular pipe need to go into the trap adapter, and is it necessary to add some pipe solvent welded between the san-tee and the trap adapter in order to accommodate the tubular pipe penetration?

I think as far as the green or the red arrows should be fine, with blue a good target, I would think.

Thanks. Most of the P-trap assemblies in bronze were 1-1/4" and the tail piece coming from the sink appears to be 1-1/4" so I thought this was the correct way a pro would do it. Am I missing something?

Should I have gotten a 1-1/2" bronze P-trap assembly?

if your talking about a tubular trap it should not go past the blue arrow
