Hi all, new to the forum, read a lot of posts, joined to ask this one question
...
Re-caulking my tile walls to shower base, after my one year old (GE Silicone II) job failed. Did a much better job of cleaning out everything (thanks multi tool) but I think that too big of a gap contributed to my issues, which were adhesion and eventually mold.
Problem is the backer rod. The gap is wide but shallow, and it varies all around. So in some places I would need 1/4" backer rod, others 1/8", others none, but also many areas are too shallow for the rod to go in deep enough. I think it's going to pop out.
First off, what about all the inconsistencies? If I managed to put together a mix of different sized rod and no rod, would all the transitions and differences just make a mess? Another idea I had was to secure the rod into place with a few carefully placed dots of adhesive (something with high tack) first, then do my caulk. But overall, the rod is seeming like it's going to be proud in some areas, due to the lack of depth and still not be wide enough.
Hitting pause and reaching out to y'all. We have another shower in the house and the family is very patient. I really don't want to have to do this again in a year.
Thanks for the help,
John
