Hey folks,
Is there a maximum distance a toilet can be from a wall behind the toilet? Is it the tank, base of toilet or neither? I know about the side-to-side and front clearances but wonder about the rear.

No there is no maximum...but there is a minimum. People generally want to minimize the gap between the toilet tank and wall for aesthetic reasons.

This distance is determined by the "rough-in". This is the distance from the center of the drain to the finished wall. Toilets are available with 3 rough-ins. 10", 14", and the most common 12". Figuring the exact space between the tank and the wall is not an exact science, but for example, any 12" rough-in toilet will fit on a 12" rough-in, but the space between tank and wall may vary somewhat not only from different manufacturers of toilet, but from model to model of the same manufacturer. The rough-in distance you have can be measured from the flange bolts to the rear wall. The blots are at the center line of the drain.

Standard toilets will fit properly when the distance between the wall and the center of the toilet flange is 12 inches. There are special toilets that will fit with the above dimension at 10 inches, but these toilets can be hard to find.

I had a customer who wanted the toilet to be 6" from the wall so he would not hit his head on the wall rack he was going to install on the wall above it. You can put the toilet anywhere you want to, as long as the distance from the front to a wall is at least the specified distance, even in the center of the room if that floats your boat.
